Have you and your children returned from abroad and want to continue their education in a Ukrainian school? Currently, there are many opportunities for integration into the educational process. We’ll tell you how to continue your education in Ukraine and how to transfer grades from foreign schools.

In our previous article, we told you that children of Ukrainian citizens currently residing in Poland will be required to attend local schools from the beginning of September.

How to continue studying at a Ukrainian school?

The Ministry of Education and Science reports that at the end of 2023, there were about 400,000 Ukrainian schoolchildren abroad. Given this large-scale situation, the process of involving children in Ukrainian school education was simplified.

Students who have studied in grades 1-2 at foreign schools have to pass an assessment in the subjects they have not studied (Ukrainian language and literature). After that, they will be able to move on to the third grade. Middle and high school students, on the other hand, have to take an annual assessment. The choice of the form of assessment is up to the educational institution.

Returning to Ukrainian schools (remotely or with a visit to the institution) has a number of features:

1. For enrollment, a written or electronic application from one of the parents or guardians is required;

2. You can return to any school, it does not have to be the school where the child studied before going abroad;

3. It is necessary to confirm the success of studying at a foreign school, as well as provide an information certificate with the specified period of study and a list of subjects studied;

4. In the absence of such documents, the child will have to take the assessment before the beginning of the school year, in case of exceptions – during the first semester;

5. If the student fails the assessment, he/she will be re-enrolled in the same class that he/she has already completed abroad;

6. The school cannot refuse to enroll a child.

Recommendations for transferring grades from foreign schools from the Ministry of Education and Science

The Ministry of Education and Science has published a scale of correlation between the grading systems of different countries and the Ukrainian one. This is how the results obtained by Ukrainian students abroad will be re-calculated.

It is also possible to transfer grades in subjects common to both countries. The Ukrainian studies component (Ukrainian language and literature, history of Ukraine, geography, etc.) should be studied under modified (shortened) programs and assessed remotely.

The re-enrollment procedure was available to schools before, but there were no clear guidelines for transferring them. What is the principle of the new system? For example, a student received a “good” grade in physics in Poland. Accordingly, in a Ukrainian school, he or she will receive an “8” grade.

If the grading models in the countries are radically different, the Ministry of Education and Science recommends that the grade should be assigned in favor of the student. For example, a student received a grade of “1” (very good) in math in Germany. In the Ukrainian education system, this grade corresponds to a high level, so you can give the student a “12”.

If the country where your child studied is not listed in the table, the grades should be converted to the general scale. Students who simultaneously study at both a Ukrainian and a foreign school can take an annual assessment before the start of the next school year with the results of their studies abroad being re-calculated.

Students who are simultaneously studying at a school abroad and at an educational institution in Ukraine have the opportunity to take an annual assessment before the start of the next academic year with the results of their studies abroad being re-calculated.

What should I do if my child was abroad while studying in the 9th grade?

To be enrolled in the 10th grade, a child must receive a certificate of basic secondary education, i.e., the completion of 9 grades. To do this, students must pass an annual assessment or state examination at any school in Ukraine.

If a child will be studying in the 10th grade at an institution that does not provide basic secondary education, in order to obtain a document on the appropriate level of education, he or she must pass an external assessment at another institution.

The annual assessment is usually carried out before the start of the new school year in accordance with the schedule and tasks. They are agreed upon by the pedagogical council and approved by the head of the educational institution.
