Oklahoma schools closing or move to virtual learning Thursday due to winter weather

JASON, WHERE ARE YOU AND HOW ARE THINGS LOOKING? WE ARE ON BRITAIN ROAD. WE JUST PASSED WAVERLY AVENUE AND WE’RE EASTBOUND TOWARD I-235. AND MICHAEL IS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. THE BIGGEST CONCERN ON THE ROADS OVERNIGHT IS GOING TO BE A LITTLE BIT OF ICE HERE AND THERE. WE HAD THAT SUNSHINE TODAY THAT MELTED OFF A LOT OF SNOW. BUT ALL OF THAT IS GOING TO FREEZE OVERNIGHT. RIGHT NOW WE’RE LOOKING AT ABOUT 20 DEGREES IN OUR AREA OF OKLAHOMA CITY. AND BECAUSE OF ALL THAT, LOTS OF SCHOOL DISTRICTS AROUND THE METRO HAVE ALREADY CALLED OFF SCHOOL FOR TUESDAY. WE TALKED TO SOME OF THOSE SUPERINTENDENTS ABOUT THEIR DECISIONS. PART OF MY DECISION IS GOING DOWN MANY SIDE STREETS ALL ACROSS OUR DISTRICT, LOOKING AT OUR HIGH SCHOOL PARKING LOTS, LOOKING AT SIDEWALKS WHERE OUR KIDS WALK, SUPERINTENDENT MIGLIORINO AND NORMAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS DOING A SHOW AND TELL OF SORTS ON ROADWAYS AND SIDEWALKS IN HIS DISTRICT TO WALK TO SCHOOL. AND IF YOU LOOK HERE, LOOKS LIKE SOME ANIMALS, MAYBE HAVE FOUND SOME TRACKS. BUT TO TRY TO FIND THE SIDEWALK, HERE YOU GO DOWN AND THAT’S JUST SOLID ICE. BUT, HE SAYS, CALLING OFF SCHOOL FOR TUESDAY IS NOT A DECISION HE MADE LIGHTLY. THERE ARE MANY FACTORS TO CONSIDER, LIKE THE RESOURCES SCHOOLS PROVIDE TO SOME STUDENTS. WE UNDERSTAND OUR SCHOOLS ARE PLACES WHERE A LOT OF KIDS, YOU KNOW, GET FOOD AND A WARM PLACE TO STAY. AND SO, YOU KNOW, THERE’S A HEAVY WEIGHT ON ALL OF US SUPERINTENDENTS WHEN WE TRY TO MAKE THE RIGHT CALL. SUPERINTENDENT BRADLEY AND MUSTANG PUBLIC SCHOOLS ECHOES THAT IDEA. AND HIS DISTRICT HAS ALSO CANCELED SCHOOL TUESDAY. WE KNOW WE HAVE SOME POPULATION WHERE THAT IS. THAT IS WHERE THEY’RE GOING TO GET THEIR MEALS. AND SO WITH US NOT BEING ABLE TO PROVIDE THAT, THAT’S ALSO INCENTIVE TO GET OUT, CLEAR OUR ROADS AND CLEAR OUR SIDEWALKS SO THAT WE CAN BE THAT PLACE FOR KIDS AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS, HAS ALSO CANCELED SCHOOL FOR TUESDAY AFTER PUTTING STUDENTS ON A VIRTUAL LEARNING DAY ON FRIDAY. DOCTOR COBB SAYS THERE’S NO NEED FOR EXTRA DAYS TO BE ADDED TO THE SCHOOL YEAR. THESE FIRST TWO ACTUAL SNOW DAYS THAT WE’RE TAKING TODAY AND TOMORROW DON’T REALLY HAVE TO AFFECT THE CALENDAR, AND HE’S CONFIDENT STUDENTS WILL BE BACK IN CLASSROOMS ON WEDNESDAY THIS WEEK. GOOD. ABOUT WEDNESDAY. I THINK THAT, YOU KNOW, AROUND 2:00 WE’RE GOING TO DRIVE TO AS MANY PARTS OF THE DISTRICT AS WE CAN AND JUST DO STATUS UPDATES ALMOST NEIGHBORHOOD BY NEIGHBORHOOD. NOW, GUYS, FOR THE MOST PART, THE INTERSTATES HAVE LOOKED PRETTY GOOD. THE SIDE ROADS AND NEIGHBORHOODS ARE WHERE YOU’RE GOING TO SEE THE MOST ISSUES ON YOUR MORNING COMMUTE. AND JUST REMEMBER, WE’RE STILL BELOW FREEZING HERE IN OKLAHOMA CITY, SO ANY MOISTURE ON THE ROADS CAN FREEZE OVERNIGHT. FOR MORE INFO ON THOSE SCHOO
