City and partner activities for Calgary kids during Alberta teachers’ strike

With public school classes cancelled across Alberta due to the teachers’ strike, The City of Calgary and its partners are stepping up to support families with a wide range of programs and activities for children. From day camps to creative workshops, these offerings help keep kids engaged, active, and learning in safe, enriching environments. 

City of Calgary Recreation & Social Programs 

To give children and youth safe, engaging opportunities during this time, The City is expanding recreation programming and public swimming starting October 6. 

  • Rec Adventures Day Camps (ages 5-12): Games, sports, crafts, outdoor fun, and possible swim time at Southland Leisure Centre and Village Square Leisure Centre. Register at calgary.ca/register
  • Public Swim: Additional swim times posted at calgary.ca/pools.
  • Existing Programs: All current bookings, including Calgary AfterSchool, continue as planned. 

YMCA Calgary 

  • 3-Hour Registered Programs (ages 6-9): Morning and afternoon blocks with lunch supervision if attending both.
  • Youth Drop-In Access (ages 10-17): Supervised access to youth rooms, pools, and fitness areas (10 a.m.-4 p.m.).
