The essential need for mental health resources
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – In light of recent distressing events in Georgia, the focus on school safety has intensified across the country. While protecting students remains a top priority, it’s crucial to also address the well-being of teachers and school staff who often endure significant trauma as a result of such incidents.
Advocates are emphasizing the importance of mental health resources for educators and urging them to take advantage of these supports systems.
Educators are frequently faced with situations that extend far beyond the typical classroom challenges. Whether responding to a school shooting, dealing with the aftermath of severe weather or managing a student accident, the emotional toll on teachers and school staff can be immense.
William Tunnell, a regional manager with the Alabama Education Association, says the trauma experienced by educators throughout the year is significant and maintaining their mental health is crucial.
“Mental health resources, including counseling services and employee assistance programs, are available, but they may not always be utilized,” Tunnell explains. “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with saying, ‘maybe I’d just like to talk to somebody.’”
For many educators, their role extends beyond teaching; it is seen as a calling. Tunnell notes that many teachers have a deep personal connection, they feel.
“It is a calling,” Tunnell says. “Many teachers I have spoken with over the years refer to them as students, refer to them as my kids or my babies and that is real. And that is why you see in cases like this educators putting their own lives at risk.”
Despite their heroism during crises, it’s essential to remember that educators, administrators, cafeteria workers and all school staff are human too. They experience fear and trauma just like anyone else.
“If you are halfway considering taking advantage of mental health resources, do it,” Tunnell urges. “Give them a call.”
Tunnell says that Alabama school districts are committed to providing necessary mental health resources for staff. He encourages all school personnel who may be hesitant about seeking help to utilize the benefits available to them.
The well-being of educators is vital, and taking proactive steps to support their mental health is crucial in maintaining a resilient and effective educational environment.
