It’s death Sim, but not as we know it.
With an emphasis on your physical skills no matter which track you choose, any athletic Sim who also fosters an interest in gardening, creative endeavors, logic, and their people skills may see themselves thriving in the Undertaker career. With such an emphasis on funerals, it only feels natural.
Updated on November 10, 2024: Now that we’ve got a little more tenure in our careers as Undertakers in The Sims 4: Life & Death, we’re back to update our guide to include a bit about those pesky career pop-ups and how they relate to your work as either a Mortician or a Funeral Director.
Undertaker Career Overview
While the Grim Reaper career, also added with the Life and Death expansion, is a bit more hands-on, Undertaker is a standard rabbit hole career that sees your Sim head off to work and returning again at the end of their shift, which changes as they get promoted. There’s quite a bit of day-night shift switching at the earliest levels of the career, so beware the promotions that see your Sim head back to work a couple of hours after getting home.
Though it’s a rabbit hole career, you’re in for plenty of career pop-ups, more than we’ve seen in plenty of other careers of that kind. These often call on your Thanatology skill and curiosity about the dead, and your decisions along the way may lead you down branching, mysterious paths of lore as you progress in the career.
Splitting once you’ve earned your promotion to level five of the Undertaker career, you’ll be able to choose between the Funeral Director career track if you’re interested in interacting with the living and helping to plan funerals and make them as memorable as they can be for the dearly departed, or the Mortician career track if you’d prefer to work more directly with the dead and focus on the science behind death and dying.
Which Skills Do You Need, And Which Traits Work Best?
In general, you’ll need to work on your Charisma, Fitness, Gardening skills to start off the Undertaker career no matter which track you ultimately decide to pursue – you’ll need to reach level two Charisma, level five Fitness, and level four Gardening before being able to choose a specialty at the fifth rank, so if you’re making someone new in CAS, it may be best to cover some element of these wherever possible with your Sims’ traits.
Later in the career, in addition to pursuing the above skills further, you’ll also need to be building your Sim’s Thanatology skill, one of the skills added in the Life & Death pack. This skill has all things to do with investigating deaths and all things to do with dying, so best to pick traits that don’t leave your Sim uncomfortable with the grim details.
If you’ve got a career track in mind, you’ll want different traits based on which your Sim is pursuing. Funeral directors will need to continue to work on their Charisma skill to expertly handle such delicate emotional situations that occur in funeral planning, while Morticians turn more toward the Painting skill to ensure the makeup on the bodies is always perfect for the viewings, as well as the Logic skill to pursue the science behind death.
Because of all this, the following traits work best for Sims pursuing the Undertaker career:
- Active helps with the Fitness skill, which is sped up when Sims are Athletic.
- Creative can help with the Painting skill if you’re looking to be a Mortician.
- Any trait that makes socializing easier, especially if you’re looking to become a Funeral Director.
- Loves the Outdoors is a good choice with how much gardening you’ll need to do.
- Macabre isn’t a terrible bonus trait, since you’ll be around quite a lot of death.
In general, your Sims will need to stay relatively athletic, and there are plenty of Grim Reaper challenges that call on these skills and traits as well, so they’re well worth pursuing, especially if you want a few extra creepy prizes for your work in the Undertaker career.
Career Pop-Ups In The Undertaker Career
Not long into your time as an Undertaker in The Sims 4: Life & Death, you’ll no doubt stumble across a pop-up about a broken grave while you’re at work, typically in the earliest levels of the career before you choose a specialty. When given the chance, your best bet is to investigate the grave a bit more. It not only gives you some Thanatology skill, but it also opens the door for more pop-ups later on.
If you’re not investigating this time it pops up, buying a new stone for the grave results in a performance loss, while cleaning it the best you can instead results in a performance gain. These pop up repeatedly, so it’s a good way to get extra performance boosts at work after you’ve checked out the grave a time or two.
Once you’ve gotten into your specialization in the Undertaker career, you’ll get a different series of pop-ups as you specialize in a branch. You’ll occasionally find traces of a soul left in bodies on your table and need to contact Grim to finish the job. Outside that, you’ll also have a series of creepier pop-ups discussing hauntings, curious bodies, and more.
When you’re given a choice labeled as “An earlier choice provides insight” in these situations, this is because you’ll need to have investigated the broken grave at the earlier levels of the career. Throughout these chance card pop-ups in the Undertaker career, there are skill checks for your Fitness and Thanatology skills, as well as occasional requirements that your Sim become a ghost to finish the quest.
Sims that are still alive can take a swim in the Baleful Bog up in the Mourningvale district of Ravenwood. This allows you to temporarily become a ghost before returning to life, and going to work as a ghost works to fill this requirement.
